Democrats and Independents Say Reverend Wright is Sincere, Republicans Disagree

Flemington, NJ, April 28, 2008Results from new national study among 618 self-reported Democrats, Republicans and independents, revealed that while a majority of Democrats and independents reported that Reverend Wright was sincere after viewing his comments, Republicans disagreed with their assessment.

The study was conducted by HCD Research today, to obtain Americans’ perceptions of video segments from a speech given by Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s former pastor, at the National Press Club this morning.

While viewing segments of the video, participants indicated their levels of agreement by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. Participants were asked pre- and post-viewing questions regarding their support for Barack Obama. Among the study findings:

  • 57% of independents and 60% of Democrats reported that Reverend Wright was either “Very Sincere” or “Sincere” after viewing segments from his speech, compared to 31% of Republicans who reported that he was either “Very Sincere” or “Sincere”.
  • 60% of Independents and 58% of Democrats indicated that they disagreed with Reverend Wright’s perceptions of America, compared to 80% of Republicans who reported that they disagreed with his perceptions of America.
  • 69% of Republicans indicated that they felt “Irritated” while viewing Rev. Wright’s speech
The Media Curves web site provides the media and general public with a venue to view Americans’ perceptions of popular and controversial media events and advertisements.

Before hearing him speak I thought that most of that had been taken out of context, and I am a republican. After hearing him speak it confirmed my suspisions that it was taken out of context. Although I have never heard one of his sermons. I may be fooled.

I, as a black American and know what my people went through and still is going through. I agree with the pastor and I am standing by Rev Wright because in his sermons he spoke upon some real issues about the Black community.. I am not a racist I am just plan sick and tired of seeing my people treated differently than others, I am just plan sick and tired of this mess. And honestly Rev. Wright knows what he is talking about....Hey you cant get madd cause a black man is speaknig the truth.

I like Obama overall, but I think Rev. Wright's remarks are a serious problem for Barak. In my mind, Barak's most positive attribute is his ability to be the first post-racial candidate. At first, I thought that Wright's remarks were just taken out of context, but it's pretty clear from these remarks at the press club (which are fully in context) that Barak's closest spiritual adviser is urging him to delve back into the morass that is black identity politics. I can support a forward-looking Barkak (and I did support him in the primaries.) I cannot support a Barak that's stuck in Jesse Jackson-style politics of white flagellation. That kind of old school racial politics would give me a serious case of candidate buyer's remorse.

After listening to Rev. Wright i feel so much that my opinions of the timing for a racial candidate for president is totally premature. it is so apparent that the black race holds on tightly to a past that does not even involve present day adults. Noone can change what our ancestors have done and to justify hatred towards an entire race is totally not my perception of a man of "God". Rev. Wright has only opened my eyes wider to a real racist
